Seabreeze downed Pine Ridge 28-7 on homecoming in a district 13-6A contest at Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach.

Pine Ridge (2-2, 0-1) struck first on a 38-yard run by Dillon Torres for a 7-0 lead with 3:02 left in the first quarter.

There is an old saying that defense wins championships. This was just a regular season district game but Seabreeze defense clamped down and controlled the tempo following that score.

“Pine Ridge gives you a lot of stuff offensively to think about. They’re not easy to defend. Our defense rose to the occasion. They responded after we got down,” commented Seabreeze Head Coach, Mark Coke.

On back-to-back possessions Seabreeze defense took the ball away as Jaleen Miranda intercepted Torres on a tipped pass then Zach McNeely recovered Torres’ fumble after he was sacked by Chase Garzio.

Seabreeze’s defense has given up just seven points in the past two games.

After struggling in the first half offensively the Sandcrabs found their groove offensively in the second half mainly on the ground.

“We had some opportunities throughout the entire game but we really just didn’t execute,” said Pine Ridge Head Coach, Kenny Pickens.

Seabreeze (2-2, 1-1) took a 14-7 lead with 2:26 left in the third quarter on Anthony Gillam’s 20-yard run.

Jadyn Nirschl’s 22-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Mott gave the ‘Crabs a 21-7 lead with 9:16 to play.

“On that play I just trusted my receiver, Mott, he can really run and he made a great catch,” responded Nirschl.

Torres threw for 111 yards and ran for 43 more while De’Sean Gilleslee had three catches for 63 yards for the Panthers.

Gillam ran for 48 yards, Deshaun Hugee 44 and McNeely 31 with a score while Brevin Glaze caught three passes for 62 yards for Seabreeze.

Next week Seabreeze plays at Atlantic while Pine Ridge travels to Mount Dora.

Players of the Game: Seabreeze Sophomore Quarterback Jadyn Nirschl and the Seabreeze defense.

Nirschl gets credit for making plays with his feet and arm he threw for 126 yards with a score and ran for 24 more and a score. Still it was the Sandcrabs’ defense led by defensive linemen Braden Buswell and Amari Davis along with linebackers Miranda and McNeely and defensive back Mott and company that dominated the game.
