Miami Carol City edged Mainland 17-10 in a defensive struggle at Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach in the regional quarter finals tonight.

“Defense wins championships. I’ll put it in the hands of our defense every week if, we need to. At this point in the season it’s all about minimizing mistakes. We beat a well-coached and disciplined team tonight,” said Carol City Coach, Benedict Hyppolite.

Neither team reached 200 yards of total offense in the contest.

“Our defense played outstanding as usual. Hats off to them,” said Mainland Assistant Head Coach, Terry Anthony.

The Chiefs defense entered the game having giving up just 55 points on the season for an average of 5.5 points per game.

The game ended when Mainland’s Camron McClaine was sacked by Carol City’s  Kewon Parker as time expired.

The Buccaneers now have been eliminated by a Miami team in the playoffs for five straight seasons.

Mainland lost to Miami Carol City (2016 Regional Finals 34-7) and Miami Central (2013 Semi-Finals 28-15, 2014 Semi Finals 31-21, 2015 Regional Finals 33-21).

Carol City (8-4) led 10-0 after Gregory Grate’s 55-yard touchdown run with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter.

Cameron Davis’ 32-yard touchdown run put the Chiefs up 17-3 with 8:20 left in the third quarter.

Mainland (7-4) pulled within 17-10 after Tank Dell’s 30-yard touchdown run with 1:28 to play in the third quarter.

Dell a receiver played quarterback in the third quarter and sparked his team.

The Buccaneers had their chances. They failed to score on consecutive second quarter drives in the second quarter only trailing by seven points deep inside Chiefs territory.

“One play doesn’t make the game but we had some chances. Hats off to Carol City they made some plays but our kids fought to the end,” added Terry.

The first ended with an incomplete pass on a fourth down goal from the six yard line and the other after several three penalties costs them 35 yards.

Davis finished with 58 yards rushing for Carol City.

DeAndre McMillan ran for 62 yards for Mainland.

Carol City plays at Miami Northwestern for the Regional Finals on November 24.
