Demaurez Bellamy ran for two touchdowns to help Mainland beat Miami Norland 21-12 in the Regional Quarter Finals at Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach on Friday night.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling but I can’t get caught up in the moment. We got to get ready for the next game. We’re a family. We stick together and we played together tonight,” responded Bellamy.

“Bellamy is a mad man. He plays all over the field and he works very hard to do so,” added Mainland coach, Scott Wilson.

The game featured strong defensive play and opportunistic offensive play.

“Our defensive front played hard, hats off to the players and coaches,” said Wilson.

Mainland beat a Miami team in the playoffs for the first time in five seasons.

“We just focus on opponent X and we played together tonight. We fought hard and I am proud of the team for that,” said Wilson.

The Buccaneers lost to Miami Carol City (2016 Regional Finals 34-7) and Miami Central (2013 Semi-Finals 28-15, 2014 Semi Finals 31-21, 2015 Regional Finals 33-21).

Penalties also hurt the Vikings who had 21 for 176 yards.

“We didn’t’ capitalize on scoring chances. We had to settle for field goals early which caught up to us. Penalties also added to it. It’s hard to come back from so many penalties,” responded Norland coach, Daryle Heidelburg.

Norland (6-4) led 6-0 in the first quarter after two field goals from Kevon O’Conner (29, 38).

The Vikings had an opening drive that took 8:42 off the clock. Their second possession resulted in a score aided by the Buccaneers fumbling on their first drive.

Mainland (7-3) took a 7-6 lead when Richard Kamara hooked up with Tank Dell for a 55-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter.

Bellamy’s one-yard put the ‘Bucs up 14-6 late in the second quarter. The drive was aided by a 41-yard pass from Kamara to D’Marcus Adams.

The Vikings pulled within 14-12 on Alec Carr’s 17-yard touchdown run with 1:46 remaining in the third. The two point attempt was intercepted by Mainland’s Andrew Plummer.

Bellamy’s two-yard score with 10:04 to play gave Mainland a 21-12 lead.

The game still wasn’t decided until Norland failed to convert a fourth down and one-yard to go at Mainland’s 19-yard line with 1:19 remaining when Carr’s pass intended for Blake Veargis went incomplete.

The Vikings had a touchdown run late in the fourth quarter called back on a penalty. They also had a penalty negate a long kickoff return.

On another promising drive in the third quarter Carr was intercepted by Mainland’s John Huggins at the five yard line.

Carr threw for 277 yards while Veargis had a big game receiving yards for Norland.

Kamara finished with 145 yards passing with a score while DeAndre McMillan added 51 rushing yards for the Buccaneers..
