Desean Wooten intercepted Jaydn Nirchl with 58 seconds remaining and DeLand slipped past Seabreeze for a 14-10 win at Spec Martin Stadium last night.

Leon Rolle’s five-yard touchdown pass to Jake Ross with 2:21 remaining proved to be the game winner for the Bulldogs.

“We have three plays for the five-yard line plays. We ran two and we scored on the second one. Coach (Tommy) Moody called that one,” said DeLand Head coach, Steve Allen.

The game was old school football as both teams relied on physical and tough defenses while running the ball on offense.

“It was a dog fight and both teams played their tails off. We knew it was going to come down to who wants it the most. Finally something went our way and we made something happen. We’ve been on the backside of that all year long and these kids have gutted it out and I am proud of them,” responded Allen.

Seabreeze (4-6) took a 10-7 lead with 8:31 to go in the third quarter after a 29-yard field goal by Zach Neely.

DeLand (2-6) struck first when Rolle found Dionte Marks in the end zone from 14-yards out with 6:08 to play in the first quarter.

The Sandcrabs tied the game when Nirschl scrambled and found Davonta Phillips from 16-yards out with 3:23 left in the second quarter.

Both teams turned the ball over three times (Bulldogs-2 fumbles, 1interception; Sandcrabs-2 interceptions, 1 fumble).

Seabreeze fumbled on its first two possessions of the game.

“I thought in the first half we shot ourselves in the foot too many times and it came back to hunt us. We also didn’t’ take advantage of our opportunities. We are disappointed but happy for our seniors with what they’ve accomplished this year,” stated Seabreeze Head coach, Mark Coke, Seabreeze head coach.

Seabreeze scored all of its points off turnovers while DeLand scored half of its points off turnovers.

Both teams were also marred by penalties which either hurt their scoring chances or aided the others.

Penalties by Seabreeze hurt them on their final possession and aided the Bulldogs on theirs.

“In the fourth quarter we played the entire time on our side of the field. We just couldn’t get any first downs. We were close a few times. Our defense was out there a lot but DeLand made some plays. Our kids kept fighting just like they have all year,” noted Coke.

The game was the season finale for both teams.

Player of the Game: DeLand Sophomore Quarterback Leon Rolle                                                                                                                                           Rolle had a fumble which led to a score for Seabreeze; he also threw an interception. On the other hand he made plays with his arm and feet. Rolle threw two touchdown passes including the game winner. He also showed poise on the go ahead drive.
